Femicide is the worst form of violence against women. Violence against women in Malta continues to remain prevalent, with 1 in 4 women having been subjected to some form of violence (FRA 2014), many of whom continue to experience the worst forms of abuse (Eurobarometer Report 2016). 17 women and girls in Malta have been killed by intimate partners in the last 10 years.
With this in mind, the Observatory on Femicide Malta, to be led by the Department of Gender and Sexuality within the Faculty of Social Wellbeing and Women’s Rights Foundation, aims to bring together academics, professionals and NGOs to raise awareness about the gruesome reality of femicide in Malta.
This Observatory will form part of the European Observatory on Femicide (EOF) that was launched in Malta in 2017 and continued to be led by the University of Malta till 2019. Malta is also an active member of the EOF.
